“Sustainable” is a complicated word when applied to the built environment…
Let’s attempt a definition as “Lifecycle Design” - All design phases down to the minutia are executed to enhance the natural environment.
As designers we are tasked to solve human environmental needs, it is my mission to practice this in a broad sense. Our human environment is the Earth and the ancient cultures knew that we are not only stewards, but engineers of positive change. During my post graduate work I minored in Sustainable Design, I have only become more fascinated and passionate with the practice over time.
Globalization has brought about fast and furious growth in a very short time frame, it is high time to reevaluate our systems across every sector to create a future for our children. As designers we must be solving these issues. While at Disney I lead the interiors group in pursuing LEED accreditation. I have studied bio-based product design, human and environmental issues in our global mining industry, permaculture, native plant preservation and wild edible plant utilization. I can tell you this, we are absolutely surrounded by life sustaining abundance. A series of small shifts in perspective and habit can change our lives on a personal level and set up our planet to thrive.
“Rotation Designs” is my professional outlet to act on these ideas. I have designed a brand and am producing a line of sustainable jewelry for it. The jewelry trade accounts for 1/13th of all minerals and metals extracted annually, a worthy area of focus to help make a difference. I focus the designs on precious gemstones that are hand collected in the US. I painstakingly track down individuals who practice ethical eco friendly stone collection. The stones are faceted by my team and made into wearable designs. All metal work is fabricated in a solar powered facility in New Mexico, using 100% recycled gold.
